How to Make Chorizo Sausage at Home
Chorizo sausage is a traditional ingredient in Mexican dishes and is often used as an easy way to add some spice to a dish. Whether you use it sliced thinly for sandwiches, sauteed in tacos, grilled or simmered in a stew, you’ll love the flavor that this sausage brings to your meal.
It’s easy to make your own chorizo at home! Here’s how to do it:
The first step is to marinate the meat in a mix of spices and vinegar. This will help to preserve it and keep it moist longer. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to two days (depending on your best by date on the raw meat) or freeze it in an air tight container for up to 6 months until ready to cook.
After the meat has been marinated, it is time to mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. This will ensure that every bit of meat is seasoned evenly with all of the spices. It’s a good idea to use your hands and knead the mixture for about five minutes before transferring it to the fridge.
This will also give the chorizo some time to really soak up all of the seasonings and bring out its full flavor. After about 30 minutes in the fridge, you will have a deliciously flavored sausage that’s ready to eat!
You can also serve this chorizo in your favorite Mexican recipes, like huevos con chorizo, tortillas or enchiladas. You can even stuff it into natural hog or collagen casings and cook it on the grill for a nice flavorful and crunchy treat!
Once you’ve made your chorizo, you can eat it immediately or wrap it up in cling film and let it rest overnight before cooking. This will allow the chorizo to deepen in flavor and release the extra juices that have collected from the marinating process.
To cook, you can saute the chorizo in a pan or skillet over medium-high heat for 8 minutes or until it’s cooked through and crisp. It’s also a good idea to add a little oil to the skillet before you start cooking so that the chorizo doesn’t burn while it’s cooking.
After it’s cooked, you can slice it and serve it with a side of fried rice or some fresh pico de gallo for a great Mexican meal! Or you can just eat it by itself for a quick and easy lunch.
For a more unique flavor, try adding other spices to your chorizo recipe! You can add cayenne, paprika, cumin or oregano to your mix. The resulting sausage will be so much more flavorful than what you’ll find in the grocery store and it’s easier to make at home!
To make a savory and easy homemade chorizo, you’ll need ground pork, chile powder, Aleppo peppers, garlic, chili powder, salt, black pepper, oregano, cumin, cloves, and coriander. You can also use other spices you have on hand, like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
